Trump has reacted to malfunctions at a UN event and has called for an investigation.
Former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump experienced an escalator malfunction at the United Nations in New York before Trump’s address to world leaders. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called for a review, suspecting intentional interference if the stoppage was deliberate.
UN officials clarified that the stoppage was due to a safety feature being activated. A U.S. delegation videographer unintentionally triggered the mechanism by stepping on the escalator ahead of the Trumps while filming backward. The system reset quickly after technicians inspected and confirmed its normal operation.
Trump’s Remarks and Address
During his speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Trump made light of the incident and joked about the first lady's fitness, stating it could have been worse if she wasn't in good shape. He also improvised part of his speech when his teleprompter temporarily froze, saying it allowed him to speak more candidly.
The event concluded without further problems, with both the escalator and teleprompter malfunctions attributed to technical issues. The UN denied any deliberate interference, emphasizing that the safety feature functioned as designed to prevent accidents.
