The U.S. Senate has confirmed President Donald Trump’s first nominee, Joshua Dunlap, to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston. The Senate vote of 52-46 along party lines approved Dunlap, a conservative lawyer from Maine, for a life-tenured position on the court.

The 1st Circuit had no active judges appointed by Republican presidents before Dunlap's confirmation, making it a common venue for legal challenges to Trump-era policies. Dunlap, a lawyer at Pierce Atwood, has a background in conservative legal work and interned with the Alliance Defending Freedom during law school.

As a lawyer, Dunlap has challenged various policies in Maine, including family leave, campaign finance rules, and ranked-choice voting. In a separate vote, the Senate also confirmed Eric Tung to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, with a 52-45 confirmation vote. Tung previously clerked for Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Antonin Scalia.

With Tung's confirmation, Trump has appointed 11 judges to the 9th Circuit Court, slightly shifting the balance against Democratic appointees. The appointments of Dunlap and Tung expand Trump's influence on federal appellate courts and reinforce the conservative presence in historically Democratic-leaning circuits.
